Activity details

Experience two of Alaska’s most iconic adventures in one unforgettable day.  Meet an incredible team of sled dogs and their musher, then cruise across a glacier-fed lake for an up-close view of spectacular Portage Glacier.

Your adventure begins with an authentic introduction to Alaska’s legendary sled dog culture. Meet a professional musher and members of the dog team while learning what it takes to train, care for, and race these remarkable canine athletes. Hear stories from the trail, discover the special relationship between musher and dogs, and learn why dog mushing remains such an important part of Alaska’s history and culture. Then comes a guest favorite, time to meet and cuddle the team’s newest generation of future sled dogs during a memorable puppy experience.

Next, travel through the breathtaking scenery of Portage Valley to Portage Lake and board the M/V Ptarmigan for a one-hour glacier cruise. Surrounded by the towering peaks of the Chugach Mountains, cruise across the brilliant waters of Portage Lake toward the face of Portage Glacier. Take in the views from the comfort of the heated cabin or head to the open-air viewing deck for incredible photos and an unobstructed look at the glacier and surrounding landscape. Along the way, enjoy narration about the area’s glaciers, natural history, and wildlife, and keep an eye on the mountainsides for mountain goats.

From energetic sled dogs and irresistible puppies to towering mountains and ancient ice, this combination experience brings together some of the sights, stories, and experiences that make Alaska unforgettable.
